TEXAS HISTORY AWARDS
As part of its mission "to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women
who achieved and maintained the independence of Texas and to encourage
historical research into the earliest record of Texas, especially those relating to the
Revolution of 1835 and the events which followed," The Daughters of the Republic
of Texas sponsor: (1) annual awards to fourth and seventh grade students who are
studying Texas history; and (2) an annual award to 4th and 7th grade
Texas history teachers who have inspired and motivated their students in their
pursuit of knowledge about the history of Texas.
The winners of the student essays and two additional guests are invited to attend
the DRT Convention and are presented their awards at the Historical Evening
Dinner. Each winner will receive a $500 monetary award, a medal, a flag flown over
the Alamo and a certificate. The winners of the Texas history teacher awards and
one guest are also invited to the DRT Convention. Their $750 monetary awards will
be presented during the Historical Evening Dinner at the Convention.
Information about the Student Essay Contest can be found here.
All public, private and home schooled students studying Texas history in the
fourth and seventh grades are eligible to participate.
FOURTH AND SEVENTH GRADE ESSAY TOPICS
The Mary Hall Mantooth Scholarship Award provides scholarships to worthy and
lineage-qualified students desiring to further their educations. The fund is
perpetuated by contributions and fund raising activities of the members of the
chapter.
Each of the 10 districts in DRT received a DRT History Trunk that had been
researched and prepared by Dr. Bruce Winders, Historian/Curator for the Alamo.
The trunk is maintained by the District Representative and is shared by all the
chapters in the district. The contents include examples of the dress of the Republic
of Texas period, eating utensils, tools, weapons, household implements, and
children's toys and games. The trunk has been taken to schools, libraries, and
historical events where the items are used to educate our youth about the daily
lives of the people in Texas during this important era of history.
The Mary Hall Mantooth Chapter is working on building their own "History Trunk"
using the district trunk as a guideline. This would provide year-round access to the
instructional benefits of the trunk and bring Texas history to life for the school
children in Angelina County.
